VERDICT

If only were these earbuds a bit more polished, they would be a really good deal. As it is, many people will be put off by the complicated pairing process and short battery life. Those brave enough to buy them despite these flaws can enjoy a pair of comfortable Bluetooth earbuds that sound good and don’t cost much. You need to decide for yourself if they are worth the trouble.

The Tzumi ProBuds 3743 Wireless Sports Earbuds will appeal to owners of earphones by Apple who are looking for a similar pair of earbuds but want them to be wireless for use in the gym or on the track. Will they hold up or even exceed the already high quality of Apple earphones? Continue reading to find out.

Design and build quality

The Tzumi ProBuds ship in a cheap box that does a pretty bad job when it comes to presenting the earbuds as a high-quality audio device. The earbuds themselves feel similarly low cost, despite being actually quite well built and durable.

They come in several different color combinations, including pink with gray, blue with black, and red with black. No matter which color you chose, the earbuds will always ship with the same pair of white inner-ear hooks. These are what distinguishes the Tzumi ProBuds from any other regular pair of earbuds.

Tzumi claims up to 7 hours of battery life on a rechargeable lithium battery rated at 75mAh. The reality is rather disappointing, as we never really got anywhere close to 7 hours. At least it takes just around 1 hour to fully charge to the battery.

Probably the biggest annoyance is the obnoxiously loud notification that is supposed to alert users about low battery power. It can’t be turned off, which means that using these earbuds late at night when you are about to fall asleep is a torturous experience.

The last thing we need to cover is the overly complicated pairing process. In order to connect the Tzumi ProBuds with your smartphone, you need to first turn off the phone’s Bluetooth, place the earbuds near the phone and make sure they are powered off, turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone, turn on the earbuds and continue holding the button and at the same time start scanning for available devices on your phone, keep holding the power button and pair the two devices together.

Sound quality

The Tzumi ProBuds turned out to be comparable to Apple Earbuds in terms of their sound quality. Their sound reproduction is very airy, which allows you to become fully immersed in the soundscape and enjoy all little details. Bass is tight, relatively precise and delivered in just the right quantity. Mids are placed slightly forward and highs seems accurate yet not prone to sibilance.

Passive noise isolation is only average because the fit is shallow and the driver housing small. You can take things into your hands and use some aftermarket foam eartips for better sound isolation.

What’s in the box?

The Tzumi ProBuds Wireless Sports Earbuds come with a USB charging cable, a soft pouch for storage, and replaceable eartips.
