The Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro are a very unique pair of headphones, indeed. Their main selling point is the ability to seamlessly switch between different sound profiles, allowing listeners to use the headphones for different music genres and even completely different applications, including gaming, mixing, music listening, and many others.

Design and Build Quality

Beyerdynamic went with an industrial look that makes you feel like the headphones can take some serious beating. If you have ever owned a pair of headphones from the company, you will be instantly familiar with the comfortable velour earpads they like to use. The earpads don’t disappoint when it comes to comfort, but the closed-back construction can make your ears feel very hot after a relatively short while.

Another thing we didn’t like about the construction of the headphones is the removable cable. More specifically, the connector for the removable cable. Beyerdynamic use a custom locking mechanism that keeps the cable securely in place. Unfortunately, it also limits your choice of audio cable to those with very thin housing.

Sound Quality

The sound customization feature of the Custom One Pro is controlled via two sliders – each located on one earcup. Don’t ask us why Beyerdynamic decided that it would be a good idea to let users customize each driver separately. In our opinion, the only thing it will lead to is that people will forget to set both sliders in the same position and their listening experience will get ruined.

Both sliders have three positions: linear bass, vibrant bass, and heavy bass. The linear bass makes the headphones sound neutral, the vibrant bass produces a fun sound signature, and the heavy bass will probably only be put to use with electronic music.

We have spent quite a while tinkering with the sound customization and trying how various settings will affect the sound. Simply put, it works. You can easily tweak the bass on-the-fly without messing with a software equalizer. What doesn’t work is the ability of the headphones to contain the massive bass inside the earpads. Sound leakage is really a problem with these headphones, and using them in public places might be a problem.

What’s in the Box

Even though the Custom One Pro are clearly professional headphones intended for people who make their living in a studio, the accessories they come with are more akin to the budget category of headphones. The only two things you get is a cable and adapter. We don’t know about you, but we like to take care of our things and nothing helps to keep any headphones in a pristine condition like a good case. Unfortunately, you will have to purchase an aftermarket one.
