VERDICT

Everybody who spends just a few hours with the Sony MDR-7506 is guaranteed to understand its popularity. You will have a very hard time finding something that performs this well for the same amount of money. It takes just a little bit of tweaking to get a truly fantastic sound that will serve you well for many years to come.

With a history dating back all the way to 1991, the Sony MDR7506 has a proven track record among audio enthusiasts and sound engineers alike. It offers a balanced sound for the great price and will definitely appeal to all audiophiles and DJs on a budget.

Design

The MDR-7506 has been available for more than 20 years and their design definitely shows it. But despite their age, they still look just as great as they did when they were first released.

The headband and earpads have much less padding than we commonly see on similar headphones, and, indeed, the pads are known to last just a few years before they start to fall apart. Luckily, there are many aftermarket solutions available, and you will have no problem making your MDR-7506 match your personal preferences.

Build quality

These headphones were designed for live monitoring and stage use back when plastics didn’t rule the world. That means that you can expect nothing but fantastic durability and long-lasting construction.

Both the earcups and the headband are made from metal and wrapped in artificial leather. The leather and all padding is probably also the only point of failure of these headphones. The good news is that their huge popularity ensures high availability of aftermarket parts on sites like eBay.

Sound

The 40mm drivers produce a bright sound with some pretty harsh peaks in highs and steep roll-off after 11KHz. Similar roll-off is also present below 50Hz, which results in a thin sound that doesn’t have much excitement behind it.

It takes a little bit of tweaking to get the most out of these old-school puppies, but, when you’re done, it’s worth every minute you spend on it.

What’s more, their closed-back construction provides great noise isolation, which makes them great for use with roommates and for busy office environments.

What is in the box?

The Sony MDR-7506 headphones come with a soft case, a Stereo UniMatch plug, and a 9.8-foot coiled cord.
