VERDICT

Sennheiser took the feedback they’ve got from their customers and improved upon what many already considered to be the best sounding pair of portable headphones. The Momentum 2.0 are perfect in almost every conceivable way, making them well worth the high price.

The original Momentum headphones from Sennheiser redefined our assumptions about portable music listening and the new generation, called Momentum 2.0, wants to push the original concept even further. The proprietary 18-Ω neodymium transducers are designed to work flawlessly with all modern smartphones and portable audio players, allowing listeners to experience an audiophile-level of sound quality without having to replace their existing devices with specialized audio equipment coupled with portable amplifiers.

Design and build quality

Sennheiser’s signature open-back design has been abandoned in favor of a close-back earcup design that gives away the portable nature of these headphones. It would be pointless for Sennheiser to create audiophile-grade portable headphones if listeners couldn’t enjoy the music in its full detail due to outside noise. Luckily, the passive noise isolation of the Momentum 2 is very good, making it easy to drift into a dimension of sound and relaxation.

The asymmetrical design is made possible by the heavy-duty metal headband that is strong yet lightweight. The earpads are made out of leather and are very soft to the touch. They let in enough air to prevent your ears and head from sweating. The part when the headband is covered with padded leather hides two small metal hinges that make it possible to fold the headphones for travel and storage purposes. Their action is precise and robust.

The single-sided detachable cable is made either for Apple devices and Android phones and tablets, depending on which model you select. It features an integrated 3-button remote with a high-quality microphone.

Sound quality

It can be argued that what makes these headphones what they are is the pair of 18-ohm transducers that are able to deliver wide frequency response with almost any audio device you can connect these headphones to.

This feature alone could potentially make the otherwise high price tag worth it. Many headphones that cost only half as much as the Momentum 2.0 do really need, at least, a headphone amplifier to really sound the best they can. This can easily add another $100 to their price.

As far as the sound signature of the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 goes, there’s just something magical about the smoothness and spark of Sennheiser’s rendition of mids. The bass is tight, controlled, and easily recognizable to all owners of any pair of Sennheiser headphones. The show is topped with the very articulated treble.

What’s in the box?

With a pair of high-end headphones comes a high-end packaging. Not only do the Momentum 2.0 come with a protective zipper case, but you also get a soft pouch for basic dust protection. A foam is included to keep the integrity of the pads intact while the headphones are folded up.
